last week a friend came over and said my brake lghts were on so i went out and investigated... we looked and found the the 7-way trailer connecter was smoking so i disconnted... brake lights went off no more problems? now my passenger side curtosey light under the dash is starting to come one very dimmley as we drive then goes out and flickers,

where do i begin to look for a problem?

Door switches or wire rubbed through to ground. Your smoking connector may have fried something in the headlight switch. The interior lights are hot positive all the time. The different switches make the ground. In your case the 4 door switches and the switch in the headlight switch. With only one light coming on I'd suspect a wire rubbed through.
