Diesel noise reduction inside the truck

Oh cool! My Fluid Damper from Leroy just showed up today...I didn't realize it would help engine noise too, I just thought I wouldn't have the noise of a broken crank someday

I did the Raamat In my truck. Double thick on the firewall, floor, back of the cab, inner and outer door panels, and the insolite foam mat. New carpet kit, and I took the 3 1/2'' foam and cut it into chunks and stuffed it anywhere there was a hole in the dash ( this helped the most). I love the product and what it did but, you aren't going to get much noise reduction, at least not engine/ exhaust noise. It makes a huge difference on putting speaker sound into the cab and in turn cutting out the outside racket, at least with my system . When talking to supplier he advised changing my exhaust to help aid in noise reduction, and also if I had the time tearing the dash out and doing the whole firewall. He also suggested to use the dynamat hood liner to aid in noise reduction. I currently have a functional 2 1/2'' cowl induction hood with zero insulation on it. I am sure I get a lot of engine noise because of this. The truck all together sounds much tighter, fewer vibrations and is quieter on the inside considering I have a straight pipe exhaust dumping under the bed, bigger turbo and no insulation on the hood.

Good info, thanks! When you say that you have it on the firewall, I assume that you mean on the inside only? Yeah, I imagine your hood isn't doing you any favors noise-wise...but it sure looks sweet! I still have the factory mat on my hood but may try to upgrade it later.

I've been thinking about what you said here....I wonder if there is an adhesive strong enough to hold lead sheets vertically on the firewall. I see you can by 1/16 x 12 x 12 lead sheets on Amazon. First glue closed-cell foam to the firewall then form and glue the lead to the foam. I just know if it will stay in place though. Again, probably way more trouble, money and grief than it's worth.

Another thing I'm thinking is to put that DEI shielding that you used on your airbox over this Metalshield paint. Did you notice a reduction in intake noise at all? Of course I suppose you wouldn't be able to tell over the diesel clatter and turbo whistle

The air box stays cool, I used this DEI on the inside of the firewall the front floor pans, trans hump, down over the exhaust side of interior, then layered sleeping mats (non-porous) foam then the floor covering. Turbine whistle is loud, very loud but getting use to it now.

The DEI was designed for the outside of the firewall and drivetrain tunnel.

I don't think DEI will stick to the coating you want to use but contact vendor to see. You do need to seal the edges with aluminum tape IMHO before install so there is no delamination over time.

Yes I did the inner firewall only. If I ever pulled the motor I might look at doing the Dynomat hood stuff on the firewall since it seems to be able to deal with the heat. If I recall it isn't too expensive either.

I just read up on the hoodliner and they say its a multiple application product for other areas in the engine bay as well as the hood. Might not be a bad option for your firewall.

I used closed cell foam that FellowTraveler suggested. I've been driving this old rattler so long I can't tell if its quieter. I did notice that the stereo is louder, which cancels out the loud exhaust.

Turn the radio up louder it always works the best. My 7.3 powerjoke I was missing the shifter boot insulator and it was so loud you couldn't hear the person next to you unless you yelled I just turned the radio up lol. Try east wood they make a boom mat material that is 10 times cheaper than competitor. I love east wood restoration products they got everything.

Why do you drive a old school diesel again?
There is factory insulation on the firewall, fenders, and hood that likes to fall apart with age. It may be impossible to find anymore to replace. There is quite a bit of insulation on the inside of the firewall as well. It also keeps the heat down from the firewall on a hot day pulling trailers.
