I have a 95 Chevy with the 5.7 4l80-e transmission. My reverse is out and I believe 4th gear is as well I am at the point where I either have to rebuild it or replace the transmission. I have never done a transmission rebuild and I'm wondering what Transmissions will be compatible and if I want to use a newer or older one what will I have to do to make it work. Or would it be easier to rebuild it? I am pretty mechanically inclined but don't have experience in the transmission world.

Welcome to TTS Im.
Better to rebuild Your transmission unless You know a very honest and dependable transmission rebuilder.
Too many horror stories of people trading in their original transmission for a reman’d unit only to find out the remanned transmission is of a non compatible year then the functionality is all messed up, too late to get back the original transmission.
I believe there are several threads that talk about such matters as this.
