I have been offered to buy an 81 or 83 Mercedes 240D 4 door sedan with power windows, power locks, power sunroof, 4 sp. manual transmission, with a cv half shaft on its way out for 500 bucks. The cv axle supposedly costs around a hundred bucks.

The reason for selling - she (the owner) makes regular trips from West Lafayette, IN to somewhere in Wisconsin. She fears the rust more than anything, but I don't think its as bad as she makes it out to be. It appears the underside was coated with what appears to be rhino lining - so maybe there is more rust then there appears. It does great at 55 mpgh and supposedly gets 32 mpg.

It was wet on time of the block - kind of like when you let your CDR vlv on a 6.5 get clogged and leave a bolt out of the intake - and oil starts collecting on top of the block - kind of reminds me of that.

Also - when i started it - that first "combustion "hit"" sounded was loud and very noticeable, but then after that, the engine sounded just like an old diesel should sound. Has dual pipes out the back and only saw black smoke coming out of them. I'm sure once it warms up, it quiets down - as those older diesels do - from my understanding.

Do you NEED it? or just want it. 300k is alot on a car... even if it is a Mercedes.

hm...good question. The car supposedly gets 32 mpg, my truck gets somewhere between 15-17 mpg, and I drive at least 90 minutes or 64 miles everyday. (sometimes more)

If this lasts for 12 wks, with no major repairs, then I've already saved 600 bucks. (it needs a 100 dollar part - rear cv axle shaft)

alright - well it appears my buddy may have found a possible better deal - 1988 F350, 7.3L (turns over but won't start), 2 new International $120 batteries, 4x4, C6, single wheel for 500 bucks. If this is legit, I'm planning on heading down to pick it up - even if the motor is junk - it'll be a nice truck to do a build-off from.

i would take the benz. these things are legends in europe. once the law forces us to get rid of them because they cannot pass TueV anymore most go to Africa and do another 500k kms. the non turbo mech inj pump engines might be slow as hell, but i would defnitely drive one as daily driver since the mpg advantage makes it a no brainer. and they are the number one pick for WVO conversions also.

I actually passed on all available options. I'm going to wait a little longer, and see where I am financially - but I think I'll just fix my jeep up so I can sell it so I can purchase a 1970's or newer chevy 1 ton 4x4. I don't really care what the body looks like, as long as the frame and cab aren't rusted through.

Gonna have to go pretty far south to find that Forest):h
