2000 Chevy Silverado 4.8. Transmission loses bite in Fw & Rv after a few minutes

I read somewhere about 3 years ago, that there is a main valve that controls the flow to both the forward and reverse valves. If that solenoid dies after heating up, that valve will close, causing the transmission to be disabled. I just can't remember where the heck I found that, but I'm leaning...

1986 GMC C6000 PS fluid running out from between the MC and Hydro booster

Yep, it's a HF High End POS. It hasn't failed me yet. I carry my Gold Plated Fluke and a load tester in the pickup for service calls. The new alternator seems to have a 13 v+- output. I'm almost there. So far: Fabricated a complete floor in the cab. Rebuilt the seat. Rebuilt the hydraulic...

    Past Driver for Extreme Hauling

That's a good idea. Fabricating a barb or something to the base of the AC for a hose is something I can do, until I find the original unit. Interesting note on 427. Is this something I could ID through the VIN, or would I look for a number on the block?

Good story. Lucky find. I'm pretty sure it's a 366. So far everything matches up, but I'll double check tomorrow. Thanks

1986 GMC C6000 PS fluid running out from between the MC and Hydro booster

MrMarty, it had no output. Bought a reman. Now between 15 and 16. Battery charged right up. Now I'm down to a seal in the steering pump and some breather lines on the valve covers.

2000 Chevy Silverado 4.8. Transmission loses bite in Fw & Rv after a few minutes

Thanks Will L. 150k miles start, 200k stop. Bought it in 6/2012. Parked it in 2/2015. Some towing, rarely heavy. Was strong till the day of fate. Aeration possible. Filter and seal were new, but will check for tightness when pan drops.

Hmmm,,, That is really good advice I wasn't even asking for. I also thought the air cleaner should have been bigger. I was almost ready to cut that threaded cover rod. Your right about trash getting into the valve cover. That's got to be fixed. I just picked up a Shop Manual Supplement...

2000 Chevy Silverado 4.8. Transmission loses bite in Fw & Rv after a few minutes

Maybe, but it has a new filter and fresh fluid installed by a lube shop. I would be pretty angry if they caused the problem.

1986 GMC C6000 PS fluid running out from between the MC and Hydro booster

Thanks FellowTraveler. A rebuild kit was my first choice, but I couldn't find one. Wasted money trying a generic kit. Anyway, I got it figured out. The final retaining plate was not fully seated. I tapped it in until it was tight and like magic, no more leak. I would bet the 2 before that, had...

2000 Chevy Silverado 4.8. Transmission loses bite in Fw & Rv after a few minutes

I had a problem with a 4L60E transmission a while back. Up until the day it failed, I drove it without an issue. Then one day, I went to a convention in Orlando FL, about 40 minutes from the house. I parked it and went inside. When I came out. I hopped into the truck, started it and drove out of...

Thank you WarWagon. It was not charging the battery so I replaced it with a reman. Haven't started it to test yet. Had to patch a rust hole in the big fuel tank. It's been one thing after another with this old rusty truck, but I think I'm finally turning the corner with it. Love that JB weld...

1986 GMC C6000 PS fluid running out from between the MC and Hydro booster

The problem is solved. The seal/spring retainer plate was not properly seated. Tapping it tight DID fix the problem. The fluid flowed through, back into the reservoir with no sign of leakage from the HB. So the last three returns to AdvanceAParts were probably good. I'm glad I found it, but what...

I know. That's a good question. This is a Pretty big truck. I'm really guessing here, so don't hold me to this. The HB provides the main pressure source and the Power Brake Booster vacuum serves as a backup in the event something goes south with the fluid pressure mid stride. It's an ole 86...

1986 GMC C6000 PS fluid running out from between the MC and Hydro booster

Update. After everyone left the house today, I dug into it. With it disassembled I studied the seals and surfaces. Everything appeared clean and tight, at first. While assembling it, I discovered something. An external plate, which holds everything in place, tapped in deeper than where it pulled...

1986 GMC C6000 PS fluid running out from between the MC and Hydro booster

Also, it pours out of the seals without any restraint through the return line. It flows through the return line which I had directed through the top port, and the HB/MC flanges, as if the seals aren't even there. So I believe it is not a pressure overload on the seals. Your suggestion about the...

1986 GMC C6000 PS fluid running out from between the MC and Hydro booster

That makes perfect sense. It's something I didn't consider. When I pull it apart, I'll make some notes of how firm the seals are, their condition and position. It wouldn't cure the problem, but it will let me know what it takes to solve it. It would at least be a step in the right direction...

1986 GMC C6000 PS fluid running out from between the MC and Hydro booster

It has one MC. If I have time tomorrow, I will loosen up the MC and pull it back to see what's happening with the HB after starting the motor before I remove it to dissect. The pressure lines have fittings and angles that only allow one order of attachment. The lines are in the only...

I can't find any references to this anywhere. So when I pull it out and disassemble it, I'll take notes and collect some images on my phone, then I'll share.
