Blowing coolant out the overflow tank. Head gasket or block??

Just going by what my mechanic buddy told me. He worked at a GM dealership for a while. Maybe I missunderstood him. Anyway my point is isn"t pretty much every vehicle have some part that is a major PIA to change or is really expensive? Don't get me wrong though the cost of injectors will come...

Blowing coolant out the overflow tank. Head gasket or block??

Before I decide to veg the truck I need to learn more about it. I don't know much about the 7.3 other then I have heard many say it is a good reliable engine & runs great on veg. Plus I want to drive it for a couple of months to make sure I like it & see how it works, tow's, rides etc. I may not...

The death of a hotrod and the end of an era...

Wow. That sounds like the exact same place mine was running a river. Right above the starter. Yep that sounds real familiar. Sorry to hear about your truck & good luck with your new ride.

    Replacement engine.

Thanks Turbine Doc. I saw that block you are talking about as well. I can't find a second hand engine I am willing to take chance on so I have decided to sell the truck as is. Guy came today to put some money down on it.

Thanks JiFaire. This site was very helpful. Very nice people to talk to & very knowledgeable. No regrets either. You win some you lose some I guess. I probably will be on this site again. Got me eye on a 01 7.3.:smile5: Thanks again.

Blowing coolant out the overflow tank. Head gasket or block??

Well I guess this is the end of the line for me & my baby. Haven't been able to find an engine that I would be comforatble enough to take a chance on & I'm not putting anymore time & money into the engine I have so I listed it last night & sold it today. Got $2000.00 out of it. Probably...

    Replacement engine.

Well that motor sold. Too late. It funny you mention a van Missy cause I just called about one that is in a van. It's in a 96 & has 250,000 km on it. New injection pump & new computer. I asked him if the IP was electronic or mechanical & he didn't know. I am assuming a 96 would be electronic...

    Replacement engine.

So I can't just use the mechanical IP on it? Just curious as to why?

    Replacement engine.

Ok. Thought it would be better to start a new thread. Found a potential replacement for my 99. It is presently in a 92 but the motor is out of a 98. Truck it is in has 300,000km but the guys says the motor has 180,000km on it. The IP is off of the original engine & had been rebuilt & is...

Blowing coolant out the overflow tank. Head gasket or block??

I have found another motor( actually a whole truck). It's in a 92 but the motor is out of a 98. Truck has 300,000 km on it but the guys says the motor has 180,000km on it. Engine is still in the truck & can be driven away. He says it is a f engine. Has a mechanical IP on it that was rebuilt...

Blowing coolant out the overflow tank. Head gasket or block??

Ok so what if it is both? Hard upper rad hose, white smoke, possible coolant in oil, gurgling & bubbling in coolant bottle. I know some of this may be just from the intital startup but I'm not a betting man but I would be alot of money that it is internal as well. Have read a bit about this in...

Blowing coolant out the overflow tank. Head gasket or block??

Well I found the problem. It's not verrrrrrrrry gooooooood. It's not the gasket or the head!!!!!! Only one thing left. My buddy brought down his coolant pressure tester so I hooked it up & started pumping. Got to about 6 psi & started seeing coolant coming out but it wasn't coming from the...

    Talk me out of it...

Why don't you just put another motor in what you have? At least you will know what you've got.

I was hoping someone was going to say that.

Blowing coolant out the overflow tank. Head gasket or block??

One more question. If I have to take the head off can I reuse the gasket & head bolts? I already have some on order just in case & I know the bolts stretch so for the cost if I have to put new ones on I will but of course if I can reuse I will. Just don't want to have to tear her down a thrid time.

Blowing coolant out the overflow tank. Head gasket or block??

The head that is leaking is the one that had 15 tho taken off. The one with 8 tho taken off seems to be fine. I haven't run it long enough yet to know for sure though. 5 tho doesn't sound like much to me but I maybe that's all it takes. Maybe this ins't the first time these heads have been...

Blowing coolant out the overflow tank. Head gasket or block??

I am going to wait. Probably would make my problem worse or create another one. Shouldn't have to torque them down anymore anyway. Called my buddy & he's bringing the tester down tonight. I am going to call the mcahine shop & ask them about the precups. If that's the problem why isn't the...
