I would check injectors first. Simplest and would be my first spot to check if that was happening to me. Good luck.

My friend diesel mechanic said about 30 seconds of slow idle prior to engaging it. It all depends on how cold. The 1070 isn't that much faster than stock, so it probably wouldn't hurt anything, the 1300 setting is a little fast for a cold engine.
