I'll probly start a new thread just so you guys that are interested can keep up with how and what takes place with the "new" engine.
I'd like to keep this thread geared toward the center mounted 6.5 turbos.
Most often you will find this engine with a sae1 bellhousing.
Ups ran these for a few years, 95 thru 98. That is where the gm bellhousing came from.
Interesting fact: it is a wet sleeved engine. The worst thing it has is the aluminum heads... they crack easily. Otherwise, very good tuff...
The engine I plan to use was originally made by VM. They called it a turbotronic 638. Detroit took over manufacturing it, put it in a behring ld15, and called it a 638 detroit. Also referred to as a vm638, detroit ld15.
Inline 6, idi, individual aluminum heads, standard gm bellhousing. I had...
For my truck, yes. The 6.5 just doesn't have the reliability and power that I need.
Detroit was kind enough to make an engine that is reliable and powerful, I happen to have one... time for fun!
Not alot of air. But it is constant. Can hear it going thru the heater core too. I suspect cracked head simply because how bad it looked when I put it together, and the fact that I have studs, and o-rings. Not alot of chance for leak at the gasket.
Air. In the cooling system. Most likely cracked head. Saw some nasty lookin cracks when it was apart.
I hate to say it, but this will probly be the end of this truck's voyage with the 6.5 platform. Moving to a different flavor of idi.
Me and my brother will still be building several different...
Don't know what all was done to it, as it isn't my pump. It belongs to a certain member here known for making power, and bending rods! It did seize for multiple reasons, but was a good experiment!
3000 mile oil change today. So far, so good. Hope it hangs with me better than the last engine. Trans may be an issue, as 3rd gear randomly slips when engaging.
On the note of fuel mileage... after a few days of town driving, I realise I'm in the lower teens. Seems big turbo doesn't like town runs. Hope highway numbers are better.
Interesting thing emerging here. As it heads toward cooler weather here, my engine has issue holding temp. I thot the thermostat was bad so I replaced it with genuine ac/delco. No change. When I go down a hill, temp goes down. Go up a hill, and it climbs to thermostat opening point. Having a...
Click the pic I posted, should take you to my photobucket account. A few pics there. A short crappy video too. Otherwise, I drive it everyday, and no time for videos or fun. :(
I think. Maybe. Possibly... I could squeeze 22 out of it if I drove like a grandpa on a long trip. But I usually run out of patience on trips and just put it down and go.
The worst I ever got was 12. Had a bad batch of wmo. Ran 200mile with the speedo pegged, and gouging on it every so...
I was getting around 21mpg with the 6.2, and I haven't got a baseline for the 6.5 yet. Seems every little bit something happens to mess me up.
It does have 4.10 gears, and I have no idea how to drive conservatively!
Rite now it has a fuel leak. Kinda kills the mileage...
