So today we got the rest of the drivetrain in.
Serviced the trans.....didn't look half bad considering this was two years of crap.
Tomorrow starts the wiring.
Not bad for 2 years worth of abuse.....
Adjusted the bands.....
Installed the fittings for the...
Well, here's the progress.
Had to lift the cab about 4"-5" to get the motor to drop in without a fuss.
Engines in, fuel system is hooked up, EGT probes are in, water lines are hooked up, cab is bolted back down, front wheels are off.
Should go pretty quick from here.
The next major...
For an all around cam, you won't go wrong with a Hamilton 181/210.
That's what SHOULD have come in them from the factory.
The one in mine is slightly bigger, 183/220.
Well, we got two things accomplished tonight......Jack and Squat.
I figured we'd put the motor in without lifting the cab a bit......yeah, that wasn't happening.
We wrestled with it for an hour or so and said SCREW IT....we'll pull the Chevelle off the lift tomorrow, lift the cab a few...
Well, she's ready to go back in now.
Got the last bit of stuff tightened up today.
Just had to swap an AN fitting on the head and add a check valve to the system and it's all good.
Hooked up the battery and cranked her over to prime the oil pump.
Tomorrow it's getting stuffed back in.
You and me both.
I'm so tired of looking at that enormous pile of parts sitting there.
Just for giggles, I'll have to take a picture of the 383 SBC that we have on the stand for size comparison. You really don't get a feel for how big these motors are until you put them into perspective...
Yup, same set of twins that were on it before.
It'll still get good mileage......it'll likely get BETTER mileage than before.
A good cam makes a HUGE difference in these engines.
The stock cam is for emissions.....it chokes the crap out of the motor.
The two best things you can do on...
Yup, that's stock.
Not much dainty on these things.
I'll get a few pics tomorrow for you to compare.....
I have a set of 350 SBC conencting rods, 454 BBC connecting rods, 5.9 diesel rods and top fuel rods.
I think you'll be surprised at what you see.
Alright, the motor is all buttoned up, except for the alternator and AC compressor.
She's full of oil, spun it over a few times tonight to make sure everything was good. Tomorrow we'll hook up the oil pressure gauge and spin it over on the starter to prime the system.
Once we see good oil...
Just to add onto the already great info provided, if you need specific portions of the service manual for either 2nd Gen (94 - 02) or 3rd Gen (03 - 09), just give me a shout and we'll get you taken care of.
The service manuasl are copyrighted material, so I don't want to post portions of it...
For some reason, when the hoods open, there ain't much stealth to it.....
):h
Actually, when it's at the local track, I almost always have the hood open. People look and see the top turbo and are like "Holy $h!t"......then I tell them to look underneath that.
Most folks miss the big...
It's still gonna be the same valve cover, I just haven't decided if I want to do anything to it.
I had it all taped off to paint it, but then I didn't like that idea and said screw it.
I may just leave the valve cover as is.
Here's the progress today.
Got the head cinched back down.....
Rockers and pushrods are back in.
Gonna run the valves and set the lash, rotate the engine to make sure there are no clearance issues.
The rockers will come back out to put the injectors back in, but...
Glad ya like it.
I'm hoping that it shows folks that you CAN do this stuff on your own.
Are there some specialized tools? Yeah, of course.
Is it anything that can be procured or borrowed? Absolutely not.
I hate hearing guys go, "Man, I wish I could do that."
YOU CAN! Ya just gotta...
