Replacing the crank damper now in addition to replacing the toast crank pulley/damper would be highly advisable. They wear fast compared to gassers and the rubber lets go and lets the outside and hub slip. And that is a bad thing indeed since it no longer damps and the stresses in the crank go...
I've done it on gassers to. Tractors (gas) seem to carbon up more than road engines, so that's where I picked it up, from some old geezer. Now I am a old geezer :olcoot: Old Flathead engines are bad about carbon-ing up too. I never do it to a newer high (8 to1 ?? and up) compression engines, or...

The old Water de-carbon thing is Very not advisable in diesels. Unless the spray in cleaner clearly states its for diesels don't use that either. Don't use ether either :)
Just a "out there" thought. I would be tempted if this was sitting at my shop to pull out the old oscilloscope and look at the stepper pluses coming from the ecu. Looking to see if they are clean and correct in amplitude and polarity. Grounds?
