    Add a Leaf?

Just my 2 cents on airbags on RVs, I love them. I bought one of those little fiberglass body motorhomes on a Toyota chassis from my mother-in-law when the engine went bad (repowering to diesel) and it has the bags on it. Normal driving with water tanks empty you just leave a small charge in...

    New tools!

I've always struggled with all the choices and different opinions. After I retired I worked some projects for DoD contractors. Most of the installers I worked with in Iraq and Afghanistan were using Milwaukee and when I asked they said that they held up to the hard use and exposure to the...

    6.2l diesel emblems

If someone else doesn't get you squared away I can do it in a couple of days. The flu is kicking my backside and I have the tailgate down on my pickup and the back full of industrial storage rack pieces that I need to get set up. Not up to messing with it at the moment. Also, my Suburban with...

Slide in pop up truck camper

I was kicking around building one too. I built an 8' from a Glen-L plan back in the 70's and it came out great but I haven't looked around for pop-up plans. I really like the Alaskans and may just get an old one of them and modify it for a wet bathroom. I have an old motorhome on a Chevy P30...

Slide in pop up truck camper

Mine wouldn't go for it and it's too bad because that's a nice setup. We looked at a couple of similar ones at the RV show last year and she was all excited until she looked around and said "where's the bathroom?". If I want mama's approval that's a must have. Didn't used to be that way but...

Slide in pop up truck camper

That's for sure. I really keep my eyes open and keep the food and trash properly stored and so on. Can't help but have some issues if you're out there a lot but if you keep from doing stupid stuff you're okay. A couple of years ago we had just gotten the boat on the trailer and saw a sow...

    Where to buy brakelines

I swear sometimes I spend more time finding my tools than doing the job. I have got to start just doing one job, finish it, clean up and then do the next. Been saying that for years...

Slide in pop up truck camper

Thanks. I get the Truck Camper Magazine newsletter in my email and checked awhile back but had forgotten about it. Come to think of it, I haven't seen a newsletter lately. Sometimes they send out stuff wanting you to confirm renewal and I probably missed it. You snooze you lose, huh?

    1994 paint - adhesion optional

Nice. You'd think duck boat paint would be pretty rugged and the pictures look good. A bunch of guys I know with old Army trucks are painting them with Behr house paint and it holds up surprisingly well. They say it cures a bit slow so you have to be careful about rub marks for a week or so...

Slide in pop up truck camper

I'm kicking around replacing my pickup camper and am wondering whether anyone know if there other places besides Yellowstone where they restrict camping with tents and soft sided pop-ups. Also, does anyone know whether there are companies other that Alaskan who build hard-side pop-ups? We were...

    Where to buy brakelines

I just talked to another guy who retired from the shop on Richardson and he said there were a couple of shops that did hydraulic lines and hoses that they used to make up steel brake lines for the old 2.5 and 5 ton air over hydraulic brake systems. He said they had the material and the...

    Where to buy brakelines

Not sure where in Alaska you are but I remember my brother in Palmer telling me about getting lines at the NAPA in Palmer. Took a couple of weeks to get them on their regular shipment but he had the option of paying freight and having them in a few days. Being "thrifty" is genetic with us I...

    Rebuilding of a Truck Camper

I really like the idea of a pop-up too. I've looked at several but they were all needing too much work for the asking price. I'll probably end up going with an Alaskan. No one with a cabover seems to want to sell theirs so I'll probably end up with a new one. Their factory is about 1/2 mile...

Need opinions: Frame repair on GMT400

Sounds like you done this before! One thing a old-timer showed me when I first started working in truck shops is when you use bolts on frames, drill the hole and then tap it, run the bolt in and then put a locknut on it. Best method I've found to get the tight fit that you need on a frame bolt.

Need opinions: Frame repair on GMT400

I've welded a bunch of these and they're not a big problem. The key is plating to move the stress away from the weld. On semi trucks you're usually dealing with alloys and it's a lot trickier. There's a really good Army manual on repair of frames that I have in digits (.pdf) but am not sure...

    Portable oil tester

We tested these (about 3 years ago, so some changes could have been made) and they will tell you about contaminants but it's pretty wide-spectrum data and that's about all they tested. They did not tell the viscosity or condition of the other additives and multiple tests of the same sample of...

need a good to great hole saw

I've been using a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and my used antifreeze for drilling and cutting for more years than I care to remember. Best thing going as far as I'm concerned.

    New tools!

I've had good luck shocking the batteries to get them to start charging again. Just takes a charger like for a cell phone (bought mine at a thrift store for less than a dollar). I also rebuild my batteries. About all the info you need is at http://www.batteryspace.com/batteryknowledge.aspx.

    Need help water in oil

Odds are good. If you haven't already, you should do a compression test before you tear into it. I know what I know, what I don't know, and who does know, so I talked to a friend of mine a minute ago who builds 454's and he said "1st suspicion, intake manifold gaskets". Says it's a common...
