When the vp44 dies will it usually have a complete failure? or will it continue to run for a while and cause intermittent problems? The truck is currently running. I will clear the code and see if it comes back (the light stays on but I don't know if the light will go out if the problem goes...
I am driving my brothers 01 cummins. Was out running errands and it did not want to start. After a couple of tries of five seconds or so of cranking it finally fired a little and then stumbled to life. The check engine light came on and I got P1689. I don't know much at all about the cummins.
Look through the threads in the "all other" tranny section that talk about the 4l60e and 4l80e and I think you will find several threads that give good detail about which year works with which. @THEFERMANATOR knows these things, so pay particular attention to what he says. With the square pan...
Finally got back to work on this thing this evening. Got all the injector lines hooked up, installed a new brake booster, and a few other little things. Hopefully it will not be too long till I have it smoking a little bit!
That is down right scary!!!!!!! I have heard stories of mechanics waving a broom handle around before daring to get close to an area suspected of a leak....to see the invisible leak cut the broom handle in half.
If you have an auto transmission, a transmission controller will cost you about $800 (Leroy Diesel sells them) There is also the option of finding the perfect parts truck that might have a transmission computer that would work for you. I think it would have to be a 1993 and maybe a 1992...
And if you have a manual transmission you can put a red X through one of the biggest expenses and challenges of the swap (and give your left foot and right hand a big pat on the back)

A lot of the hurdles I had to jump in the wiring also came from my changing transmissions, and going 4x4 to 2x4 (affected getting the speedometer and ABS to work) so the longer I think about it the easier...
I think modifying the gas harness would be doable if you were going with a mechanical IP. The engine sensors for oil press, coolant temp, etc; are pretty simple as far as wiring goes and a mechanical IP only requires two wires............. so most of the work would be cutting out the wires you...
I got a parts truck and swapped harnesses (still had to modify the harness that I swapped in because it was from a electronic injected engine and I am putting in a mechanical) but that was not too hard....mostly just cutting out extra wires.
It also needs to be said that I have not fired it up...
Got a couple hours on it again today.............. I have looked around but have not found a diagram of which fuel injection lines go where. Anybody know? I have taken them off and put them on multiple times on my truck, but they were always clamped together and I did not bend them out of shape...
I believe (from my experience swapping harnesses for my tahoe project) that the harness could be unplugged. I was not really paying much attention to which wires went to the headlights, but I unplugged the entire dash and engine harness so I obviously unplugged it somewhere. (this was on a 96)
yea.... I was kinda chuckling at the direction this thread was going..... At any rate if you do find an answer, please post the results cause this appears to be an area not too many folks know how it works
