Just tried starting it this morning and with the 60G glows I have to give it a little longer glow then it starts and runs smooth. Without the extra it will run a little rough and smoke, nothing like before though. I don't know what normal is because it has always (since I have had the truck)...
How painfully easy to time when the Frickin IP gear is timed correctly!!!
Set new installed IP vertical after correcting gear timing
Started good and ran up to 190 Deg
Commanded Time set engine did not stall WAHOO Desired 2.8 - 3.2 Actual dropped to 0
Shut off turned IP a...
No service slips from before the Pump took a Dump, but PO told me it happened while vacationing and stranded. A previous search of Serial # showed it being done a a dealer but I no longer have that info. It was covered under the 11 year warrantee for IP.
Yes dropping bolts does waste a TON...
Years back they may have removed the timing cover to do the job, I was careful when I did the IP swap without removing cover but was still worried that the gear could have jumped a tooth. Good to know it can't. Thanks for all the help and support guys.
So if there are let say for round numbers there is 60 teeth on that gear divided by 360 Deg that would put that IP out of time 6 Deg. 12 Deg of crank timing, does that sound correct?
And the verdict is
Out one tooth. This has been out for 10 years when the PO hard the IP take a dump when he was on holidays down south. The pump was done at a GM dealer. Looking back through all his service slips from local GMC dealer, he has fought cold weather starts for...
Tried that but pre cup in the way of piston and could not get rod through. Will have to pull things apart. With other reference it does appear to be out at least a tooth.
Thanks ak, I have the HB line pointing at the bottom hole now and the IP pin is I would guess 1 tooth clockwise of straight up. I think I now know what I will be doing tonight! At least there is a Chinook blowing right now.
Does the keyway line up with the harmonic balancer line? Then I need to know where on the cover the line points to, I will then use a punch to mark the cover. I think I will try Bison's idea, that will be accurate. Then I can see through the oil filler hole to see if IP gear pin is straight...
Thanks Bison, I was just looking at head pictures to see if I could go though the injector hole or glow plug hole. Could not remember which went through the pre cup. Your da man.
I haven't got the timing cover off yet, I was hoping to reference it to confirm if it is. If it is out I don't mind doing it but if it looks good I have already done a lot of labour (and money) with no positive results yet. Tough sell for the IP with the wife, with the cold weather I want to...
It is the hard cold starts and smoke that I really want to fix. I know something isn't right and I am starting to think that the IP timing gear is wrong. I cannot do a Time Set or Learn engine will stall during procedure, turning pump both ways made very little difference. Thanks
With CPS unplugged it will start and run, if CPS is plugged in and Optics sensor unplugged it won't. Thought I had a bad CPS, which was replaced when I did HG and water pump. So I ordered another one with same results. I don't actually need a pointer even a picture for reference would work...
Yes it was changed and right now I have the fan and belt off so I did not run it up to 180* But all other times it was at 180* or higher and all codes cleared.
