We had an old 6.5 that blew the oil cooler lines on the highway and by the time we shut the engine off and coasted to the side of the road, the damage was done....needed a new engine.

You need to resolve the coolant temp sensor issue. It is causing the GP light, the not shifting into OD, the noisy engine, and the smoke....
When the ECM believes that it is cold, it tries to go easy on the engine. Fix the sensor issue and your problems will disappear.

If you spray in ether, and the engine is rotating (engaging the starter), the engine will fire up regardless of your IP, injectors, electronics, etc.
