AMG long block on eBay in Ohio

That's a very short long block. Can't even tell if the crank and recip assy is still there or not. I still want it though... cripes, I just spent five bills on a 599 short block. I coulda had a V8 for 3 more...!

Caught one in the radiator. Oil cooler exploded and engine quit. Won't turn over...

Holy smokes. So sorry about the truck, WW. Really glad you're unscathed. Hopefully insurance will fund your next project now?

    The Cowboy Cadillac Revival

GM doesn't stock the alignment pins any longer according to my local truck center guys (who are VERY good at hunting down parts, however obsolete.) Here's the PN, in case you want to sleuth it further: 12558081 ( Pasted from <http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/showthread.php?t=629> ) But...

Testing for source of coolant in crankcase?

    > And what is so special about the 82 red block engines? A very good question. I've been trying to dig out as much detail as possible about the evolution of the 6.2/6.5 block over time. Aside from the prevailing wisdom, I've found very little hard information on this. Sure would be great if...

Testing for source of coolant in crankcase?

Well, after coming *that* close to dropping $250 on an '82 red block motor (supposedly runs well), my local machine shop found me a 599 6.2 block for $500. Crank and rotating assy included. That means I can go .030 over if I can find a set of pistons, or go .080 over and use std 6.5 slugs...

    installing pistons got some questions

Might as well check them in pairs on each rod journal on the bench. That way if anything needs attention, you won't have to pull rods and remove the crank to do it. You will have to rotate the crank in order to attach all the rod caps though, so one certainly *could* do it as the rods are...

    What Engine Did I Get??

2002+ 506 Block improvements It's not just that. There's some serious redesign as well. I believe that the main webs are thicker, cooling passages revised, alloy revisions, etc etc. Not to mention the addition of a forged steel crank! So a 506 block from Navistar is pretty much a...

    "599" project

I'm curious about what primer you're using. Does it hold up under the heat over time? And the color coat? I ask because I just paid some crazy dollars for the Alpine green (Volvo diesel) spray bombs at my local truck center.

New here +motor build up ?'s

"DANGER WILL ROBINSON !!" That would be a 506 block with squirters and smaller outer main bolts. I just left one at the machine shop for them to add to their scrap pile. Cracked through one of the squirt bores and up into the main web. Crank is damaged enough from the flexing in that...

1982 6.2 "Red Block" Engine on CL in PacNW

Not mine, just happened to run across it while searching for a rebuildable block. It's listed at $500 obo. http://salem.craigslist.org/pts/1679474974.html Somebody save this thing from the scrap bin ! (I suspect he'd take well under 5 bills for it, as there's no mention of the unique...

Testing for source of coolant in crankcase?

Annnnnnd, the verdict IS.... crack in one of the main webs, and abnormal wear on the corresponding crank journal. Forgot to ask which bearing it was, but I'll take pix of the failure when I go to pick it up. So it's time for a new short block. Damn. Anyone have a line on a used (running)...

    Buying a Suburban - 6.5l vs Vortec

Waitaminnit.... What's wrong with the Sub you've already got ?? 'Cuz for 4k simoleons, you could put a used Banks kit on that pup, swap in a bulletproof 4L80e, give it a fresh coat of paint, and still have enough cash left over to fill the 40g tank with bio!

Starter Related Fastening, Bracing, etc Questions

Starter Bracket P/N's As already answered, yes indeed. For a '92, you should want the 23502557. This assumes you have the gear reduction style starter. If you have the older direct drive type for some reason, you'd want the 14028931. The old P/N of 11513703 has been superceded by...

Testing for source of coolant in crankcase?

Yes, thanks notwithstanding NVW! Well, I finally heard back from the PO. Says he found milky oil on the dipstick after running it for 15 minutes (incl a drive around the block) immediately following the head replacement. He pulled the pan, pressurized the cooling system, and saw water...

Testing for source of coolant in crankcase?

An excellent point. Thanks much. I can probably leak test the in-rad oil cooler with air pressure and a gauge. Any other typical places worth checking for water-to-oil leaks ?

Testing for source of coolant in crankcase?

Clarification Coolant leak is into the engine crankcase, tranny is fine.

Testing for source of coolant in crankcase?

So I bought a very nice 85 Sub for a great price. It had a 6.5 crate motor (WITH Banks turbo system!) as well as a SR trans installed at a GM dealership in 1999. A couple of years ago the prev owner had an event of some sort (still trying to get more detail) which ended with the discovery of a...
