I pulled the starter out and ak diesel driver had it right. The gear would sometimes catch when I spun it by hand and sometimes it would slip. Off to NAPA to buy a new starter drive and pick up my starter bracket. Thanks for all the help.

I did check the operation of the starter before I installed it. I even greased it up like Number suggested. I don't think it is binding as the starter still spins freely after it disengages from the ring gear.
It is the direct drive starter (the pig). When I first put it in, it seemed to work fine then it started acting up on me. It looks like the pinion shoots out far enough, just doesn't engage ring gear as deeply as it could, possibly becoming disengaged as the motor tries to light off. Thanks...
UPDATE: I disconnected the starter at the battery and had the wife crank the key while I watched the starter. The pinion does not look like it engages into the ring gear very far. I do not have the bracket on right now, but will pick one up from the dealer when they get it tomorrow. Starter...
