Well ..... they've certainly had a few strange ones over the years. But, I'm a fan of Gen 1 Durango's. I liked my '01 4.7, the '03 5.9 is a lot of fun to drive, handles very well for a 5,000 lb. SUV. I've got a few basic mods on it, nothing major, but the 5.9 is an old style V8 with lots of...
Josh, did you find the Durango Owners Club, www.durangoclub.com? I'm a long time member, have an '03 Durango R/T 5.9.
You found the right info, on the 4.7's that sludge accumulates around the fill tube, doesn't cause any problems at all. I had a 4.7 before my 5.9 and worried about it a bit...
I've never been in a 1500 so I don't know for sure, but I have a feeling the ride wouldn't be all that much better. Like yours, mine rides hard on bumpy roads, but is smooth as can be on the highway or decent local roads. Even a 1500 is a heavy truck with truck suspension.
I always see your...
I agree, just jump the lift pump and open the t-valve to get some fuel flow, prove out that the lift pump is working and make sure you have fuel to the filter manager. No need to prime the engine. I don't see where you are located, if a cold climate it would be good to run the block heater...
Dave, I suggested yesterday you draw a cup of fuel off the t-valve, and you mentioned it in another post. It takes only a minute, and you keep wondering about the fuel, so why not run outside right now and take a look? I'm curious too, would be nice to find out if it looks dark or cloudy or...
One more thought - air leak somewhere. That would let fuel bleed down causing the long cranking, would also cause hiccups and uneven idle. Not sure why it would go away at times though ......
I doubt its bad fuel, you'd have the trouble all the time, not some of the time and other times perfect. Just for a check, run a cup of fuel out of the t-valve just to see what it looks like. Also doubt its gelled fuel, once running you've got a heated filter manager plus heated fuel...
When a flush is needed - which in my opinion is pretty rarely, and certainly shouldn't need one yet in your '07.
I've motor flushed some car engines, have had to do more on boat engines due to water in oil problems. Motor flush does a great job of getting emulsified water/oil out of the...
Dennis, if you start up, idle for 1 minute at normal idle, then hit the 1070 high idle switch, does it happen?
If you try to hold high idle rpm with the pedal, you are varying rpm as you ramp up, then try to hold steady, even with a good IP its hard to do it perfectly, the pedal is moving...
That would make me nervous, taking a dead cold diesel and start it to 1600 rpm immediately, no oil flow yet. I idle for around 30 seconds before going to high idle, and I just use the 1050 rpm switch.
The reason I'd like to check fuel pressure before looking into IP or other issues is that it's simple to do and it has caused fish-bite for me before. In my case it was a dirty fuel filter causing pressure drop under load. You can get a pressure gauge from Harbor Freight, or an auto parts...
I'd suggest you put a fuel pressure gauge on it before the cold start, then start and watch your fuel pressure. If at high idle you see the pressure drop you may have a weak lift pump. Also, how long since your last fuel filter change? A partially plugged filter can cause fish-bite. Once the...
