6.5 “pops” & blows black smoke intermittently

I was definitely going to use a light coat of dielectric grease.

6.5 “pops” & blows black smoke intermittently

I was just concerned about moisture issues.

6.5 “pops” & blows black smoke intermittently

Lost out on the used 1, so I will be putting Leroy’s 1 in this weekend. Are people actually installing them in the front bumper, or behind it in the chassis by the radiator?

6.5 “pops” & blows black smoke intermittently

I have to buy the one from my buddy because it’s his dad’s, but I am getting a good deal and get to test it first. It doesn’t have sticker but comes mounted on a heat sink (gold in color) and has a pretty long cable. It does say it’s made in the USA and has a resistor inside.

I would rather put it towards that external fuel filter or the carter lift pump. $$$ is always an issue.

6.5 “pops” & blows black smoke intermittently

A friend said he might have a spare pmd when he swapped his blown 6.5 for a gasser a few years ago. I got the one one from Leroy’s but I can always return it for another part that I will sure need, like lift pump. I took the truck to AutoZone, but there were no codes. I drove it 30 minutes out...

This is the new driver’s side harness. There is a small spade end inside the connector body.

Leroy’s comes with either a #5 or #9 resistor. I think the #9 is the most preferred.

6.5 “pops” & blows black smoke intermittently

I just saw a Dorman PMD setup with 6’ cable for $170 and it says lifetime warranty.

6.5 “pops” & blows black smoke intermittently

That makes sense. I will have to scope out the bumper area. My bumper has some “nature made” air passages.

Leave the spare in the engine compartment? Heat over time?

6.5 “pops” & blows black smoke intermittently

I was just looking for a spare pmd. Stanadyne only, or have there been some successful aftermarkets?

It appears to be a quick disconnect plug. I will take a pic of it this weekend. The passenger side did not have this additional connector. So it’s a fused wire that goes back to the computer showing the glow plugs are being energized?

6.5 “pops” & blows black smoke intermittently

I forgot to have it scanned for codes. I will try to do that this weekend.

I tried but my phone apparently wasn’t capable.

Are the crank position sensor and the camshaft position sensor the same thing

6.5 “pops” & blows black smoke intermittently

I watched the video and am not sure that’s the same noise. The fact that it is hit or miss makes it tough. There is no load after idling and then accelerating while in park. And there is a definite load doing up to 90 mph on the freeway and it did not do it. The randomness almost makes me feel...

6.5 “pops” & blows black smoke intermittently

This is a carryover from a previous thread that got really long. I have a1997 K3500 and just got the glow plugs fixed, so I can start it in weather under 60 degrees. As I stated before this problem is intermittent. Sometimes just after idling, and sometimes when I’m driving down the road. What...

That may have worked, but as rusty as my truck is, I am glad I did it to have room to work around.

    TTS Newbie & 1st Diesel

Well..., it got in the high 30s so I worked on the passenger side glow plugs. Super pain to get fender out, as I had to cut off 2 of the bolts that just spun. And I had to drop the exhaust pipe and loosen clamps all the way to rear of truck. Removing the glow plugs was the easiest part. One had...
