That is my understanding as well, I have checked mine a number of times as well and am confident that it is correct also. Just figured leave no stone unturned, you can find lots of documented burned off plugs from advanced timing I couldn't find barely anything on the whole tip breaking off like...
"This may or maynot apply to you but the tips burning off is a sign of over advanced timing"...
I do plan to confirm my timing as I don't want to overlook something again... This was a pain in the arse and would not wish it on anyone. Thanks for the recommendation.
Here I a picture of the 2 plugs missing the electrodes.... Not burned off missing completely. The complete full length of the electrode fell thru the precup opening into the cylinder while driving, made a hell of a racket.
Unfortunately I drug my feet on making these repairs and it's been well over a year since I purchased them. Sad thing is they have less than 3k of run time on them.
I did look at all of them while rolling the new rod bearings in but I am second guessing myself after the shock of finding the other electrode missing... Crappy feeling for sure.
I will at the least send my bore scope up thru the oil drain plug to the bottom of that piston driver side rear #7 and double check that there isn't an obvious crack. Will.L the ones that you had and know of that dropped glow plug electrodes, did they also have cracked pistons ?
Definitely will not be running the Bosch plugs anytime soon... I pulled all the plugs and cranked over the engine till I had oil pressure built up before starting the other day and found one other glow plug tip that had a missing electrode. So I now believe I actually had 2 separate events the...
Yes, I am aware of that as well as dripping injectors can cause the glow plugs to swell or burn off. This is an actual documented failure of the glow plug electrode tube mechanically separating from the threaded body of the plug and falling thru the precup opening into the cylinder and being...
Okay, yeah I didn't think about that hummer is much more accessible for sure .That debunks my thought process on that one . Sounds like 60g's for me also.
Just out of curiosity what side of the engine where the glow plugs on yours and if you know the others? Mine was passenger side #3 . I had thought maybe I had damaged it installing it, my thought was using a long extension there is the possibility to accidentally manipulate the extension and...
The reason I am asking is I already had purchased a new set of Bosch glows from Rock Auto and now I am reluctant to install them if there is a concensus that they are having QC issues.
This one did the same thing with in the year the whole electrode fell into the cylinder. I purchased this truck and did a bunch of work to it one was put the Bosch glow plugs in which I have had in another truck for several years with no problems. I scoured the forums and haven't found any...
Yes, those are new Fel-pro head bolts. I would have done ARP studs but I will wait till I have the engine out of the truck. The engine I a Navistar w/ about 100k on it. Yes I already had new rocker arms installed because that exhaust valve for that cylinder hammered the valve tip, leading up to...
