Well picked up some parts the other day and included was a round style air box off of a 1997 cab and chassis truck. Is this the "best" air box setup that chevy did? I see another post for a 98 and up style, i was just wondering when they started the round style box. If so the only thing it came with was the box itself, i still need the elbow that connects to the turbo inlet...

It came off a cab and chassis truck so maybe it is the k47?/ I will chewck tomorrow morning, it still has the stickers on it .....

Yes, the K47 housing will fit either the standard filter or the 'HD' filter. From personal examination, it appears that the two filters are very similar, except the "HD" filter has an outer filter in addition to the pleated paper - it is some kind of synthetic mesh which fits around the filter canister. Based on what I see, it is NOT better in terms of CFM flow - the standard filter should be fine for most people - Let's just say you get a lot less power and a lot more black smoke when using the HD filter. It is also quite expensive.

Unless you really are in a high dirt/sand environment, I would stick with a stock AC Delco filter.

DOes anyone know where the number is cast into it? I must be blind or something cuz i cant find it.....
I see some stickers and a few cast numbers on it but i dont see a k47 any where. What would the casting # be if it was the regular model...?

The only thing that will be "cast" into the box is the filter sizes. I just purchased a k47 box for a 98' to upgrade my flat filter style. On the box is written "Replace with AC Airfilter A1300C / Use A1306C For Severe Dust Conditions" Nowhere does it mention the K47.

Dieselslug, you said you are missing the tube that connects to the turbo. Do you have at least the elbow coming out of the box? I am gonna go tomorrow to the performance shop to get some tubeing. I want to make something from the turbo to the box thats a little higher flow than stock.

What are you guys running mostly for filters?? I still cant decide what to buy. Id really like an oilless filter, but im thinking now with the spray recharge kits they might be a bit easier to re-oil.

No i dont have anything but the box itself. I actually need the clamps that hold it together too... SO for now i have the top and bottom half of the round box. There is no way i can check the truck if it says k47, but yet this one says the same replace with ac delco A something, and then replace with ac delco A something1 for dusty conditions. SO i believe its the bigger box.. The guy i bought it from is going to look a little harder for it but im sure he wont find it...:mad2: So i take it the elbow is a two piece setup? I thought it was just one elbow.... Where did you get the box?? Do you know of anyone that would sell a few parts?? I figured someone would have a broken box or something and want to sell the tube, but i guess its harder to come by then i thought....

I found mine online with one of those searches like car-part.com. Mine came from Maine with the tube, but when i called him to order it, I requested the tubes from the turbo to the box. He told me they normally dont save "such parts" and there was no chance in getting one haha. I called 9 surrounding junkyards and came up only with a 6.5 van. Seems as though there arent many in the yards around here.

As for the clips, i havent looked yet, but they look to be the same as on the flat style box. So you might be able to re-use those. I will post some pictures once i come up with a tube set-up.

Please do so. Any one have pics of how the air box is set up? If i can get some pics maybe i can make something up.....

I just used the 97+ round filter and housing and my old 1993 rubber 90 degree elbow, combined them with a 90degree black plastic plumbing elbow(is it abs or pvc?). I prefer this setup over the factory 97+ plastic and rubber 90 elbow which gets flatend out, and I suspect a little restrictive. I will see If I can post a pic of my setup.

You made that elbow? If so where did you get it, if i had that elbow i could plumb it in right now!! How well does it connect to the filter side?? That elbow looks like it was made exactly for that purpose....

That round filter is massive, wish I had that stock. I can see why everyone says it works the best, barring a nice custom setup with battery relocation.

The plastic elbow is just a waste-water elbow from Home Depot. I put one in when I was running without a filter box (Bad idea, by the way). I do wonder about it holding up under all the under-hood heat.

I would stick with the stock AC Delco paper filter personally. In tests it seems to have the best performance/efficiency trade-off. K&N did poorly.

whoever had my truck last stuck a K&N filter in there. now my maf sensor and whole air intake system and the blades on the turbo are covered in oil.

That is exactally what i was looking to do also. I know what you mean about the 97+ elbow...it looked quite restrictive as it goes from almost 4" to only 2 1/2" wide at the bend. That plumbing elbow seems to work perfect. Looks like ill be hitting the hardware store instead of the performance shop tomorrow!
