Yeah, so this happened. Borg Warner S364.5 SX-E. Has a 64.5/87 compressor wheel, 76/67 turbine wheel. 0.63 A/R turbine housing. First test drive was last night...and holy shit. This thing rocks! I will get some more pics and video soon f or you all. It's disgustingly amazing. Enjoy some turbo porn. Also....my billet HX40 60/64/14 is for sale. $300 and shipping.

Looking at the pic of the new turbo- that thing looks almost silly from the difference in sizes.

How soon does it light? Any back pressure readings done? Bigger story man, just pretend you are related to me to help you talk longer...
 
Ok, I will give a little more in depth background, just for you Will L lol So with the new injection pump I have, I have an immense amount of fueling down low to about 3200rpm. The HX40 made decent work of this but sacrificed a little on the bottom end because I went with a setup that would allow me to still keep it highway friendly with 4.10 gears on long trips. Well, I got a 2nd vehicle for myself (1987 Danger Ranger, KING CAB lol, super nice little runnin around truck though, 4.10's with a V6) which means my 6.5L is kinda now moved to strictly play toy instead of daily, which opens up a huge amount of possibility. I wanted to always try a Borg Warner series of turbo out of curiosity. I didn't want to sacrifice airflow and step down from my HX40's airflow potential, so I went with the biggest exducer compressor wheel I could find while still keeping a 68/76 turbine wheel, because it was most similiar to my HX40's turbine wheel and I liked the characteristics of it. And the result from that search was the S364.5/68 SX-E. I chose the SX-E over the SX series because of the flow characteristics, and stronger internals, and the fact it was only available in the SX-E series, so it worked out good. I had to think about the turbine side for a while, but I felt comfortable going with the 0.63 A/R on the turbine side. To some it may seem to small, but to create the characteristics I wanted, it works. I know the shaft size is upgraded from the HX40, both wheels are immensly bigger, and the turbine is an open scroll housing, so I wanted to still get predictable spool so I chose the 0.63, and I got to say, no regrets at all. It looks super funny, yes. But the performance gain to best match my fuel curve is almost laughably huge. There was a lot of choices I had for turbines (12cm, 12cm wastegated, 14cm, 14cm wastegated, a shit ton of huge T3 and T4 mounts) but I feel I tuned the turbo to my needs perfectly. And isn't that the goal
 
@6.5L You need to try out a ball bearing turbo like a in production equivalent of a discontinued Garrett Powermax GT3788R. There is nothing like the Garrett Howl: it's not a tiresome/fatiguing high pitched whistle. Regardless the spool up of this turbo with the Ball Bearings is night and day over the JB turbo's. This turbo is huge and I have no trouble lighting it off at low RPM on the 5.9 Cummins. Yeah it's (BB) twice the price for twice the fun...

The wind down of the BB turbo after the engine stops is something else...

We are at the extreme ends IMO where you are light load with the light RC truck of yours. But that still looks like a very small exhaust housing on your current turbo. Not silly @Will L. , just concern of high back pressure small. :confused: What's it's size vs. the GMx as the pic may be deceiving us?

Im not actualy a fan of BB turbos. To be honest i am not a fan of any garrett turbo. I dont like there design. And i doubt the backpressure is something to worry about for me. My manifolds balance it out and with the better flow, im good
 
Sounds good. Tad more smoke than I can deal with, but the 5 speed makes that a bit worse.

With the well built IP and injectors you are running, how would you guess it is for someone running a stock db2?
 
Im not actualy a fan of BB turbos. To be honest i am not a fan of any garrett turbo. I dont like there design. And i doubt the backpressure is something to worry about for me. My manifolds balance it out and with the better flow, im good

Any specific reason you don't like the BB's? Just curious.
 
I think for the cost associated with them, the gains just aren't there over a standard journal bearing. Everyone preaches the spool up time but I've yet to see comparisons with identical setup and identical turbos, one journal, one BB, and see a difference in rpm spooling I'd be willing to pay even $20 bucks for, let alone the money associated with them. I can save money, get the same results, and use the money spent elsewhere

Fair enough. OTH we have tried an $800 ATT with a now ~$800 BD Spool Valve that is easily the same cost combined as a BB turbo. :woot: So I would suggest cost alone isn't a good reason "overlook" BB turbo's.

Regardless there is something to the 'said preaching about how easy BB's are to spool'. It's directly from less HP loss in the bearing: Journal bearings take several shaft HP and heat the oil with it.

The RPM change on the 5.9 of mine going to the stage 3 over a stock turbo isn't very much and same smoke with the tuner as the stock turbo. I expected to have to rev it up like the 6.5 ATT setup, but, I don't. It's just as smoke free as the OEM turbo on the stock tune. Having the supporting mods like a better non EGR camshaft grind makes a big difference to avoid the 'too big' problems OEM cams have with the larger turbo. (Mods were done with the stock turbo and then the BB was dropped on months later.)
