Halt Halt Or I'll Release My Dog
Tools needed:
1 pair small needle nose pliers
1 paint can opener tool
Torx drivers (hafta look up sizes, don’t remember)
Small screwdrivers
Wire cutter/scissors for trimming the wires on your light bulbs
Soldering iron with sharp thin nose and solder
#7219 bulbs from radio shack (2 per package) (2 per switch)
Socket in size I don’t remember for steering wheel nut
Awl/stiff wire/coat hanger to get the airbag off.
Okay, so I go to replace the lights in the controls… I use a paint can lid opener to
pull it out… however, the lower ones were not coming out far enough for me to even detach it, let alone reattach it.
So I had to pull the wheel itself off… for this, I used instructions in here: http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=251352&highlight=remove+steering+wheel
With the air bag out, it didn’t matter, the wires were not budging at all, so I unscrewed the nut in the middle, took the horn wire out, pulled on the wheel wiggling and banging and it came right off.
Flip the steering wheel over and you will find two torx screws holding the back plastic cover on, take them out, remove the back cover and you have all the room in the world to work with the wires.
To get the back plastic off, you need to pry with a small screwdriver and it feels like you may break the plastic, but luckily I did not. It will come off like this:
You will now see the circuit board. Pull it out.
On the other side is a blue plastic cover, remove that also
Now flipping it back over, you will see these two plastic insulators holding the bulbs
Here on the right hand side of the insulator you can see the wire I pulled up.
The light bulb wires will need to be pried up (They are bent over this insulator, use something sharp to grab them) They pull right up easily.
Using your soldering iron, heat one end up and the wires pull free. Be sure to use a small pair of pliers, the wire gets hot quick!!
The larger buttons have a different style of light bulb insulator, but you can figure that out easily enough on your own… it’s all common sense.
