I'm looking for a portable one for my grandmother. She's wanted one for a long time.

Any good suggestions on a user friendly version for older people?

Exactly what I'm looking for. I don't need a ton of bells and whistles or one that costs alot of $, but hopefully someone here can educate me on what all is available. Glad you posted that Jeff. I'll be watching.

My wifes grandfather has the Garmin Nuvi. He loves it because it is simple. Believe me, if it were complicated, he would chuck it in the trash. Those are really nice units. I would recommend it.

That was the one I was actually looking at.

I'll probably go with this one, for around $200 it doesn't seem all that bad.

I dumb redneck I know used the garmin nuvi for the longest time. If he could figure it out anybody can.

So, I ended up buying the Garmin Nuvi 255. Got it plugged up, and I must say this is a nice little toy! I don't really see why you would spent $500 + on some other units when this one does all that a person will need in my opinon.

Simple operation also. :D

Garmin makes good stuff. I need one for my car since I have an indash nav in the truck. I've grown heavily dependent on nav systems now.

I agree. I got my Nav added to my Alpine unit yesterday, I must say I love it!

They make life so much easier. We've got one in each one of our fire trucks. 2 Garmins and a Magellan. The Garmins are alot easier to use too.

I was wondering if EMS and such used these gadgets. I can't see how you guys did it before.

A lot of remembering roads and cross streets. lol:pound:

Actually, pretty much just used a map if we were unsure of where we were going. We also have a county road index thats about 4" thick. It lists all of the streets and cross streets, and the addresses where the cross streets are located. Really hard to do if you're in the truck by yourself.

The TomTom is suppose to be one of the easiest to use and good price.

I have a Cobra NavOne that I bought back in 2004 when GPS's were first starting to hit the market in any quantity. Get this......It costs me $1000.00 minus a $50.00 rebate. Since then it came down to about $600. Cobra now has several other models that they didn't have then.

It has taken me around the US and Canada when I was hotshotting and hauling RV's and horse trailers. It has some quirks that I had to learn to get around or ignore. They have only done 1 software upgrade. It doesn't have near the number of places (hotels, rest areas and the like) (maybe 500K) and the new ones are in the 2 or 3 million range.

The new ones have more features and cost a lot less. I will use the one I have until it crashes however.
