Over the years I had a few people ask how to do it properly -
Ran across this video and this is the same tester (Pensky Martin) I worked with for years.
The normal starting point for the temperature would be 30°f. He didn’t say it in this video but he started close to flash temperature in order to show no flash/ flash.
Unfortunately he didn’t show the flash well- but lighting has to be very dim for it.
The flash is quick, but when you lift the flame out, the mechanism automatically closes to snuff if the oil/fuel is still burning.

Having the propane tank that close is not desirable, neither is using that large a tank. A hand held unit like you would use to heat a rusty bolt for removal is safer.
