I asked the manufacture about the aluminum ones. He said none of theirs have failed, but also said if you tow heavy a lot to get the steel ones. They don't cost much more anyway.
So Id just get the steel ones and cover yourself in all sitchyations.
 
So if we have aluminum wheels is it suggested to use steel? What about between duals and inside of duals?

Only reason I ask is it seems there were some combinations that were advised against on trucks that tow frequently

I know it's been done but I like to here that's it's not completely stupid.
 
Only combination I have seen that looks completely odd is where somebody removed the inside wheels and just used the outside wheels. And it was a GMT400 full length dually (4 door, long bed). Am sure there was a reason, but it did look strange . . .
 
Seen similar and think they were just saving money on tires and maybe a tad MPG since they weren't towing.

I have aluminum spacers but don't tow heavy often. They are made of I believe 6061T6. Not sure what aluminum rims are made of but wish I would have went with steel for piece of mind. The aluminum should be strong enough or at least comparable to a rim but one big difference a rim has 8 holes the spacer has 16 (holes plus lugs) so it has to have appreciably less meat to it.

I feel like one of my lugs turned a bit ? It felt like it slipped. But knock on wood the tire shop has never complained about them. When I do my brakes in the next while I'll report on what I see if any wear showing.

Steel is fine with aluminum rims. I would paint the adapters in any case to prevent rust.

They can be had from 1" to 4" Most common is 2" I'll be getting 2"

Have not heard of anyone running 2 sets per wheel.
 
On my cab and chassis dually the inside dual might run the leafs if I go much bigger than 235/85's. I might be ok with 255/85's which is what I'm planning but I have thought of doing 285/75's and that would be getting close
 
I have 2" steel between my dual's and have for some time, different manufacture.. I like them, makes it feel much better wen heavy with a goose neck.. I wouldn't recommend aluminum between dual's, more tork on the wheels & lugs...

Never known of anyone with 2 per wheel, but I'm sure someone has... and towing heavy doing it, doesn't sound too safe to me....
 
Idk the details, but i remember having to upgrade to a lot better wheel studs on the old drag cars because of the load added made them more susceptible to breaking. Probably worth the investment. Espcially those of you that tow real heavy.
 
Good idea, I need to stop by there for a visit anyway.

We have a Walbro FRC10 kit for Hummers that were getting ready to post there also.
