2002 6.6 duramax with soot in coolant tank

I have a 2002 6.6 that got too hot when water pump failed. It has soot or carbon in coolant tank but still has good pressure. Maybe too much pressure! Any ideas?
 
Thanks, I was afraid of that. What about a cracked head? I'm hoping not, but want to be prepared.

Maybe but, lets hope for the best. There is a way to tell which side has the issue but, I do not remember.

Maybe someone else will chime in.
 
It involves disabling the water pump drive (hard to do on a gear driven dmax pump), draining down the coolant level slightly below the t-stat opening, stat removed, to see which side the bubbles come from. Something like that...
