Can I swap my 1999 GMC 3500 6.5l diesel 4l89r transmission with a 2006 4l80e diesel transmission?
My 1999 transmission does not have the 12 o’clock mounting hole.
Can I cut off the bell housing mount hole from my 2006 to clear the turbo?
Are there any other differences internally that won’t let me swap them?
Thanks
-Ben

The 06 will work fine in the 09. The top bolt hole shouldn't be an issue, just leave the bolt out(some early blocks have it, most don't).

Thefermanator, thank you for the reply yet I have a 1999 Savana 3500 with the 6.5 diesel. I also have a tranny from an 2006 diesel van.

The 2006 tranny has the new bell housing and wont clear the turbo with the upper mounting hole in place. I can remove the mounting hole, but are there any other differences internally to the unit?
Thanks
Ben

There are quite a few differences internally as the 06 is actually a 4l85e where your 99 is a 4l80e, but none of those differences will interfere with it working or not. Several have swapped in gmpp 4l85e into older trucks with no issues. If you have to you can cut the top mount off. Just make sure and do it so there will not be any openings for things to drop into the bellhousing, and no sharp corners. Sharp edges/corners are areas where cracks can easily form, so make sure to grind it smooth when you're done.

Thank you Thefermanator. I have been asking around a lot and I get the same answer.... ‘No, send me your core and I’ll rebuild it’....
Thanks for your insight.... has anyone ever dine this swap before? It seems pretty straightforward.

-Ben

The trans used in the duramax van is the same trans GM used to sell in there GM performance part's catalog. It's a 4l85e unit, and several have swapped them into all kinds of vehicles and older oem's.
