    Default Oil Bypass filter installation

    Thank you to Matuva for showing us his install. This is the same kit he used. For $119 it is the best value for your $$$$$. Also thanks to Wyatt (1999gmc) for last minute answeres to my questions.

    I did this mod at the same time I did my oil cooler. I do have a 4X4 and this mod allowed me not only to remove the stock filter and locate the bypass filters to a more convienient location for cleaner replacement and cooling, it allowed me to remove the 90 oil filter adapter that all our 4X4's have.

    Choosing a location was difficult. I know Matuva has his located on the driver sided of the engine compartment, however I wanted mine inside the frame. Unfortunately I was unable to find a location in the front half of the truck inside the frame rails for the filter. Soooooo, I put it out side the frame rail on the passenger side about center of the front door.

    So here it goes:

    1. Drain oil.

    2. Remove oil filter.

    3. Remove 90 degree filter adapter if you have a 4X4.


    4. Remove the threaded stem from the 90 w/ a 24mm(I think) socket by clamping 90 into a vise.

    5. Screw it into the stock filter housing on the block.


    6. Screw the adapter onto the block filter housing just like you would an oil filter. There are 2 hose connector stems on it. Twist the addapter till they are 1 in front and one in back. Parallel w/ the drive shaft.


    5. Drill holes for the bypass filter housing where you want it. I chose where I did because it required the least amout of fabrication.

    6. Bolt on the bypass filter housing.


    7. Connect the hose and clamp. I ran the hose over the top of the transfercase. I used some fabric heat shield where it ran above the exhaust. I used some coil/spring looking hose benders to bend the hose so it would run toward the back of the truck up and over the trans case. See pics.

    It is approximately 3" above exhaust.


    Here I used one of the clamps that came w/ the oil cooler kit to pull on of the lines away from the drive shaft and then zip tied the other to it. I also used some of the plastic cover that was on the original oil cooler lines since it is so close to the cross over pipe.



    Hope this helps the next guy who attemps this.

    One upgrade that I am going to make is swap out the barbs on the plate that mounts to the block w/ the 90's that come w/ the oil cooler kit. And change out the rubber hose w/ braided lines. That way I'll never have to replace the rubber hoses again. The manufacturer suggests every 2 years for the rubber hoses.

    It actually isn't an amsoil kit. It came w/ baldwin filters. The instruction kit had the equivalent p/n's for ford, fram, wix, etc. It only cost $130. That included shipping.

    where'd you get this kit from? i've been looking into a bypass filter setup for my truck. With my truck being a 2WD it'll be an easier install, and for $130 shipped thats not bad at all.
